The Magnificent Memphis Pyramid

One of Memphis, Tennessee’s most iconic landmarks is the truly incredible Memphis Pyramid. This iconic glass pyramid stands proudly in the heart of the city overlooking the Mississippi River and has a long and storied history.

The city of Memphis and Shelby County built the Memphis pyramid as a joint effort in 1991 to be a sports and entertainment venue. The arena was part of the city’s larger riverfront development project, which included a hotel, several restaurants, retail outlets, and entertainment venues. The Pyramid is a unique feature—a large, glass, steel-framed pyramid with the country’s tallest free-standing elevator. Since its opening, the Pyramid has become a beloved part of the Memphis skyline.

In the beginning, the Pyramid served as a home for many Memphis basketball games and a variety of concerts and special events for just over a decade. The arena changed hand in 2002 serving as a church until 2006. Then, in 2015, Bass Pro completely renovated the Memphis Pyramid and converted it into a Bass Pro Shops megastore (making it the second largest Bass Pro shop in the world) and the Big Cypress Lodge (a fantastic and rustic retreat in downtown Memphis).

The Memphis Pyramid is now a unique retail, dining, and entertainment destination. Inside, shoppers can explore more than 500,000 square feet of retail space. An indoor-outdoor aquarium, some very happy gators, 28-story glass elevator with viewing deck, bowling alley, five fantastic restaurants and cypress swamp showcase give visitors a start to finish experience. The pyramid is also a popular destination for special events, hosting everything from wedding receptions to corporate events. Those looking to stay a little longer can stay in the 18-story pyramid hotel, offering over 80 guest rooms and suites.

There are five fantastic places to eat when visiting the pyramid. My personal favorite is the Lookout at the Pyramid. After enjoying the scenic elevator ride to the 28th floor, you’ll be greeted by a gorgeous pillar to ceiling aquarium and all around glass view of the city and river along with two spectacular viewing decks. They provide high end cuisine and a truly unforgettable atmosphere. On the main floor there are two fun and fantastic restaurants, Wahlburgers Wild (perfect for its uncommon meats and exquisite burgers) and the Fishbowl (an island themed sports-bar right against the bowling alley).  The Mississippi Terrace has a panoramic view of downtown Memphis on a beautiful patio and ties with the Den (located on the third floor) for the best place to stop for finger foods and drinks.

The Memphis Pyramid is an iconic landmark, beloved by locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re looking for some retail therapy, a marvelous meal with unbeatable views, or a unique space to host your event, the Memphis Pyramid is sure to deliver an unforgettable experience.
